Sustainable Development

"Today's problems cannot be solved if we still think the way we thought when we created them" Albert Einstein

Sustainable Development at 4NW

The future prosperity of the North West is dependent on the decisions and actions that we all take today. 4NW recognises its core responsibility in working towards the economic, social and environmental well-being of the region, both now and for the future, by ensuring that the principles of sustainable development underpin and integrate all of our activities.

We are taking a leading role in the advancement of the sustainable development agenda across and beyond the North West, and working with partners and stakeholders across all sectors to ensure that sustainable development principles are a consistent and underlying feature of policy-making and delivery.

4NW has made huge progress in recent months in bringing sustainable development to the heart of all its functions (Planning, Scrutiny, Housing, Europe and Transport) and is demonstrating how the aims of sustainable development can be integrated and mainstreamed into policy and delivery activity.

This section of the website provides an overview of projects and activities which we are driving forward to demonstrate excellence in sustainable development. It is organised around the four sustainable development priorities set out in the UK Sustainable Development Strategy, Securing the Future, and also includes  sections on how we are bringing all of these priorities together through integrated tools and some of our achievements todate.

The path to true sustainable development involves tough, often controversial choices. Here at 4NW, we do not believe in shying away from our responsibility to make the right choices, and to turn these choices into meaningful actions.
